How to Study for a Final Exam in One Week: A Day-by-Day Plan

Quick answer
With one week left, spend day one mapping topics and past papers, days two to five on active recall and practice questions for your weakest topics first, day six on a full timed mock exam, and day seven on light review and sleep. Rereading notes is the least effective use of the time.
Start with what works
Decades of learning research point to two techniques that beat everything else: active recall (testing yourself) and spaced practice (returning to a topic over several days). Rereading and highlighting feel productive but produce weak retention.
Day 1: Map the exam
- Collect the syllabus, lecture list, and any past papers.
- List every topic and rate your confidence 1 to 3.
- Find out the format: multiple choice, short answer, essays, calculations.
Days 2 to 5: Recall and practice
Each day, take two or three of your lowest-rated topics.
- Write down everything you remember about the topic without notes.
- Check your notes and fill the gaps in a different colour.
- Do practice questions until you get them right without help.
- Make five flashcards for anything you missed.
Start every session with ten minutes of flashcards from previous days. That is your spaced practice.
Day 6: Full mock exam
Sit a past paper under real conditions: timed, no phone, no notes. Mark it honestly. Spend the afternoon only on the questions you lost marks on.
Day 7: Light review
Go through flashcards and your mistake list. Stop by early evening. Pack what you need: ID, calculator, pens, charger, and login details for online exams.
The night before
Sleep matters more than one extra hour of cramming, because memory consolidation happens during sleep. Aim for seven to nine hours.
During the exam
- Read every question first and mark the ones you can answer fastest.
- Divide your time by marks, not by question count.
- If you get stuck, move on and come back.
For online and proctored exams
Test your webcam, microphone, and browser the day before. Close other apps, clear your desk, and keep your ID within reach.
