Can MyMathLab detect cheating or someone else doing my work?

    Question

    by Nina P.

I have someone helping me with MyMathLab homework. Today my professor mentioned 'unusual answer patterns' in class without naming names. I'm freaking out, what does MyMathLab actually track, and what triggered this?

MyMathLab (now MyLab Math under Pearson) tracks more than students realize:

    • Time-per-question, large variance across a single homework set is a red flag. If you spent 2 seconds on Q1 and 8 minutes on Q2, that's flagged.
    • Copy-paste events, pasting an answer (rather than typing it) is logged.
    • Tab/window focus loss, leaving the tab during a question is logged.
    • IP address per session, if your homework was done from one IP and your in-class quiz from another, the gap shows.
    • Answer pattern across the cohort, if 8 students submit identical wrong-answer paths, the system flags all of them.

The 'unusual patterns' your professor mentioned could be many things and most likely isn't aimed at you specifically, instructors say this to discourage cheating broadly. But going forward:

    • Have your helper work problems on paper first, then YOU type the answers in. Same final score, no copy-paste log.
    • Keep timing variance reasonable (don't submit a 30-question set in 4 minutes).
    • Use your home network for MyMathLab consistently.
